Temperatures in late August drop to around 26–33°C, which is way cooler than early August. Besides, August is the last month in summer holiday, and after August 20, the peak summer travel season in China gradually ends as students return to school. What to Do in Chengdu in August
1. Visit Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (2.5–3 hours)
It is recommended to enter right at opening time, around 07:30. In the cooler morning hours, pandas are most active, and it’s also more comfortable for you to walk in the extremely large site. You can see pandas eating bamboo, climbing trees, and playing, and these are rather hard to see when the daytime summer heat arrives. By midday, most pandas will be resting or sleeping.

It is recommended to enter the attraction area between 07:30 and 09:00. Temperatures in Mount Qingcheng and Dujiangyan are about 3–6°C cooler than in the city, with daytime temperatures averaging 22–28°C. They are fully covered with ancient trees and bamboo forests, shaded areas, streams, and mountain breezes, all of which provide natural cooling, thus local people would come here every year to escape from the summer heat.

The Sanxingdui Museum is fully air-conditioned, so a light jacket really helps. In August, the site receives a large stream of visitors. To avoid the crowds, it is recommended to visit before 08:30 or after 16:00. Early hours are generally quieter with fewer tour groups.

3. Leshan Giant Buddha
Many tourists will put the Leshan Giant Buddha in their Chengdu tour itinerary. To better explore this attraction, it is recommended to visit between 07:30–10:30 (it takes around 1 hour to travel from Chengdu to Leshan by high-speed train).
Summer temperatures in Leshan are also high, often exceeding 35°C. A boat tour (about 40 minutes) is recommended to avoid long exposure to the sun. The boat is air-conditioned, and you only need to go on deck briefly for photos when passing the Buddha.
If you decide to hike, note that some sections are exposed to the sunlight, and the heat can be intense, with a risk of heat exhaustion. It’s better to wear sun-protective clothing plus a wide-brimmed hat, and also prepare a handheld fan.

What to Wear in Chengdu in August
In August, the average temperature ranges from 26–33°C, with high humidity and frequent rain, so you’ll constantly feel hot and muggy. As you may travel between the city, mountains, and indoor venues, temperature differences will also be noticeable. So clothing should be breathable and quick-drying, with easy layering.
- Wear short sleeves or light dresses on top. Carry a thin jacket in case you visit air-conditioned indoor places or cooler mountain areas.
- For bottoms, shorts or light long skirts are better. If you want to go hiking or join panda volunteer activities, prepare long pants that can protect against insects.
- Comfortable sneakers and sandals perform quite well in an outdoor environment.
