Chengdu – Ya’an – Kangding – Xinduqiao – Litang – Markam (Tibet) – Basu – BomĆŖ – Nyingchi – Lhasa

However, if you wish to see other sights that are a little out of the way, you can take small detours and get back on track later. If you want to visit Mount Siguniang and Danba, you can go in that direction when you leave Chengdu and join back on the main route in Xinduqiao. To stop at Daocheng Yading, you can make your detour from Litang.

Chengdu – Home of Giant Pandas

Nyingchi – Lulang Forest

The best time for a road trip from Sichuan to Tibet is in Spring, April and May, and Autumn, September and October. These months are the best time to visit Tibet because the weather conditions and natural sceneries are at their peak.

In the spring months, snow is starting to melt in the areas at a lower altitude. Flowers are in bloom, adding colors to the vast meadows. You will witness some of the most amazing landscapes. Although where the altitude is higher, it’s still a little cold, overall, the journey be smooth and full of surprises.

Fall is the best time to see the snow peaks as the weather will be the clearest. The trees start to turn in color in the mountains. However, for the best experience and make the best of your time along the way, it’s recommended that you make a stop at the places that you want to see. Spending 10-12 days on the road will guarantee you a fulfilling experience.

What Documents Do I Need to Travel to Tibet from Sichuan by Road

As of now, foreign visitors are not permitted to drive from Sichuan to Tibet or travel in Tibet independently. You must do so with a registered tour operator in Tibet like China Xi’an Tour. Besides a China visa, you will need the following travel documents specifically for Tibet:

  • Tibet Travel Permit is required for all foreign visitors traveling to any part of Tibet. Your tour operator can help you obtain it.
  • Alien’s Travel Permit is required for Tibet travel outside of Lhasa, which you will need for the road trip along G318 highway.
  • Military Permit is only required if you wish to visit certain sensitive areas in Tibet, such as Mount Kailash or Lake Manasarovar.

  • Warm, layered clothes, because even in the summer, it can be cold at such an altitude
  • Medication that you routinely take and for altitude sickness

For accommodations, major cities, towns, tourist areas will have relatively better options like international hotel chains. These places include Chengdu, Litang, Daocheng Yading, Nyingchi, and so on. But as you continue along your journey, the more remote or higher it gets, the accommodation options will be less ideal with less facilities.

Dining-wise, you will mostly encounter Sichuan and Tibetan cuisine. Sichuan cuisine is rich in flavors, sometimes with a lot of spices. Tibetan cuisine has a lot of regional characteristics with yak meat, noodles, and barley. If you’re unaccustomed to the local diet, it’s recommended that you bring your own food for the journey.
