Preparation Before Your Visit
Decide When to Go
Picking a good time of year to visit Beijing and the Forbidden City is very important. The city itself and the attraction can both get extremely crowded. The peak travel season for the Forbidden City is from April to October, and the low season from November to March. The best time to visit BeijingĀ and the Forbidden City is generally spring and autumn. The weather will be ideal for traveling, and the tourist volume wonāt be crazy.
Itās important to keep in mind the times of China public holidays. These are times when attractions will be the most crowded. Summers are usually not a good time either when schools are out and many people go on vacations. So to avoid crowds at the Forbidden City, the best seasons are spring, autumn, and winter, the low season, except for during the holidays.
A good tip for visiting the Forbidden CityĀ is to go on weekdays. The time of day makes a difference as well. To avoid long queues, the best bet is to start waiting in line 15-20 minutes before the opening hour 8:30am. If you arrive right on time, the line would probably be long already. If you prefer to visit in the afternoon, consider entering after 2pm. Last admission happens 50 minutes before the end of the visiting hour, i.e. 4:10pm for peak season and 3:40pm for low season.
Book Your Forbidden City Tickets 7Ā Days in Advance
One of the foremost challenges for first-time visitors to the Forbidden City is getting in: it doesnāt sell tickets at the gate, so you need to make a reservation online beforehand. The Palace Museum releases around 40,000 tickets a day, 7 days in advance at 8pm Beijing time, and in peak seasons or on public holidays, it might sell out within a couple of minutes. Thatās the difficult part.
For international visitors, you can book your ticket online on the Forbidden City official website. Simply sign up with your email. Select the time of your visit. Youāll be asked to choose between the morning and afternoon time frame. You can purchase combo tickets to the Gallery of Clocks and the Treasure Gallery which will be CNY 10 each. Then confirm your order and proceed to pay. You will receive a confirmation in your email.
Probably the most important Forbidden City visit tip is that you should book your tickets as early as possible, preferable at the time of release. If you have permanent residence in China, you can book on WeChatās mini-program and also enjoy the free and discount policies. The morning session ends at 12pm, and the afternoon check-in starts at 11am. If youāre having a hard time getting tickets, you can book a Forbidden City tourĀ with China Xian Tour, and weāll take care of everything for you.
Necessary Travel Documents
Make sure you bring your passport when you visit the Forbidden City. The information you enter when you book the tickets must be consistent with whatās shown on your passport. It will be checked at admission.
For visitors eligible for the disability discount policy, you will need to bring your disability certificate.
What to Wear
The only way to tour the Forbidden City is on foot and it is large. Expect at least 20,000 steps, so wear light clothing. Be sure to wear comfy walking shoes. Lots of areas donāt have any shading during the heat of summer,Ā so make sure you have sun protection, especially if you are coming on there on a hot day.
Food and Drinks
There are a few restaurants and cafes inside, but we recommend bringing some snacks of your own. The prices at these restaurants tend to be quite high and the wait time might be over 30 minutes during the busy hours.
Entrance and Exits of the Forbidden City
Location of the Forbidden City
The Forbidden City is located in the center of Beijing. The palace ground is of a rectangular shape surrounded by a moat. You can cross the moat at East Prosperity Gate, West Prosperity Gate, and Gate of Divine Prowess. The southern end of the Forbidden City is connected to Tianāanmen Square through the Meridian Gate.
How to Get to the Forbidden City & Entrance Guide
The sole entrance to the Forbidden City is the Meridian Gate, so to get there, look for directions to this specific gate. There are three routes to the Meridian Gate:
- Take metro line 1 to Tianāanmen East Station. Walk to East Prosperity Gate, cross the moat and enter the Meridian Gate.
- Take metro line 1 to Tianāanmen West Station. Walk to West Prosperity Gate, cross the moat and enter the Meridian Gate.
- Walk through Tianāanmen Square to reach Meridian Gate.
Visit Tianāanmen Square and the Forbidden City Together
Tianāanmen SquareĀ is another must-visit attraction of Beijing. It is the political and national symbol of Peopleās Republic of China located right to the south of the Forbidden City. Many visitors like to go to both attractions together. From Tianāanmen Square, walk northward through Changāan Avenue, and youāll find yourself at Meridian Gate.
However, crossing through Tianāanmen Square to the Forbidden City is the slowest route of the three. There tends to be long queues at the security check. Plus, you have to make reservation in advance for visiting Tianāanmen Square.
A good Forbidden City tip for shortening your wait time is to pack light for your visit. Bring only handheld and small zipperless bags that can hold essentials, so you can take the āNo Bagā line which will save you a lot of time through the security check.
Exits of the Forbidden City
The Forbidden City has two exits, Gate of Divine Prowess (North Gate) and East Prosperity Gate. You can choose one depending on your tour route and your plans afterwards. There are metro stations nearby both exits, Zhongguo Meishuguan (National Art Museum) Station and Jinyu Hutong Station.
- The Gate of Divine Prowess is along the central axis, the central north gate of the palace. A tour starting from the Meridian Gate and finishing at this gate would take you right through the whole palace and you would be able to cover a lot of the highlights. Jingshan ParkĀ is opposite the road, the best photography spot for Forbidden City from above.
- The East Prosperity Gate is closer to the entrance of the palace. It is within walking distance to Wangfujing Snack Street, the best place to discover authentic Beijing foods.
How to Make the Most of Your Visit?
Plan Your Route Properly
Depending on how much time you have in the Forbidden City, plan a route through ahead of time so that you can just follow along once youāre there and not miss anything. Below are two routes that are wonderful for first-time visitors.
Quick Half-Day Itinerary Route (2-4 hours)
The Meridian Gate ā Hall of Supreme Harmony ā Hall of Central Palace ā Hall of Preserving Harmony ā Palace of Heavenly Purity ā Hall of Union ā Palace of Earthly Tranquility ā Imperial Garden ā Gate of Divine Prowess
This is the classic visit route along the central axis of the palace. It covers all the must-see halls in half a dayās time. You can learn much about the architecture and royal history. You can also add the Gallery of Clocks and Treasure Gallery to your visit to see some amazing historical artifacts.
Itās a great option for visitors with a limited amount of time in the Forbidden City, say if youāre on a Beijing day tourĀ or a Beijing small group tour. For families traveling with kids or seniors, you wonāt be walking too much on this route.
In-Depth Full-Day Itinerary Route (6 hours)

This is the ultimate route for lovers of Chinese architecture, culture and history. It visits most of the areas of the palace that are open to the public and may take the better part of a whole day. Youāll discover many hidden gems in the details of design and layout, the stories that have taken place on this ground throughout history. Itās great for solo travelers, couples, or visitors on a Beijing private tour. Be prepared for extensive walking if youāre taking this route.
Choose Halls That Interest You the Most
There are a number of exhibition halls within the Forbidden City. You can select a few that appeal to you the most. The two most famous ones are the Treasure Gallery and Gallery of Clocks. You could also book a Forbidden City guided tour with us. Compared to the service at the attraction, which is unable to guarantee the presence of an English guide and follows fixed routes, we can make your trip more flexible.

There are also many souvenir shops and bookstores in the Forbidden City. More Important Tips Based on Our Real Experience
1. Luggage Storage
Thereās free luggage storage service at the Forbidden City which is very convenient. You can drop off your bags at the entrance and pick them up at either exit, Gate of Divine Prowess or East Prosperity Gate.
2. Wheelchair and Accessibility
However, some sections still have high steps or raised thresholds, so assistance from a companion may be needed at times.
The attraction is friendly to wheelchair users and visitors with strollers. Most areas have accessible paths especially along the central axis. However, some halls may have raised thresholds where you may need assistance.

If youāre visiting the Forbidden City in the summer, the heat can be quite unpleasant. A big part of the palace ground is without shading. One tip is to visit early in the morning when the temperature is more tolerable. You can bring an umbrella or a hat for walking outdoors.
One of the best places to see the snowy sceneĀ of the city in winter is the Forbidden City where time seems to linger when the white snows are around the red wall of the palace and all roofs are golden and tree branches white.
4. Nearby Attractions
Before or after your Forbidden City tour, there are many other nearby attractions where you can see more of Beijing. Weāve already mentioned Tianāanmen Square, Jingshan Park, and Wangfujing Snack Street. Beihai ParkĀ is a good place to observe the leisurely local life.
