If this is your this is your first visit to Xi’an and you only have one day for this trip, stick with Xi’an’s most famous attractions like the Terracotta Warriors. If you’ve already covered the main attractions in your previous Xi’an tours, you can start looking beyond the city.
Mount Huashan, Luoyang, and Tianshui are the most practical choices for a day trip there and back, while Foping is better suited to families and nature lovers. Pingyao and Hukou Waterfall can be explored in one day, but the journeys are much longer and may feel rushed.
That said, high-speed rail has made more places reachable from Xi’an, but being able to get there and back in a day doesn’t necessarily make the trip worthwhile. In this travel guide, we’ll explain how the different options compare and how to plan your best Xi’an day trip.

Two Top Recommended One-Day Xi’an Itineraries
If you only have one day in Xi’an, especially if this is your first visit, make the Terracotta Warriors your priority.
Route 1: Terracotta Warriors + Xi’an Landmarks
This is the most recommended route for first-time visitors to Xi’an.
Route: Terracotta Warriors → Xi’an city center → Giant Wild Goose Pagoda → Grand Tang Mall
Get an early start for the Terracotta Warriors and set aside about 2.5–3 hours for the main visit. Pits 1, 2, and 3 are the main highlights, along with the terracotta figures that are still being restored.

Head back to the city in the afternoon, then make your way to the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda area for a look around. Save the Grand Tang Mall for the evening and take a leisurely walk around as the area gets livelier.
Best for: First-time visitors, families, and Chinese history enthusiasts.
An 8-hour Xian layover tour covering Terracotta Warriors and Big Wild Goose Pagoda with private round-trip airport or train station transfers included.
Route 2: Xi’an’s Historic Core
If you’re more into old neighborhoods, architecture, and street life, this route is a better way to see the city the city.
Route: Xi’an City Wall → Xi’an Museum + Small Wild Goose Pagoda → Bell Tower + Drum Tower → Muslim Quarter
Start your morning on the Xi’an City Wall. You can walk part of it or rent a bike and cover more ground. From there, move to visit the Xi’an Museum and Small Wild Goose Pagoda. In the late afternoon, the Bell Tower and Drum Tower area is a good next stop on your way. Then finish up in the Muslim Quarter with local snacks and the atmosphere of the old city.
Compared with the Terracotta Warriors route introduced above, this one keeps transportation to a minimum. It’s a better choice if you’d rather spend the day wandering around Xi’an than sitting in a car and traveling on the road.

Mount Huashan: Xi’an’s Best Mountain Day Trip
If you’ve already seen the Terracotta Warriors, Mount Huashan is probably the best day trip from Xi’an to add something completely different to your trip.

The mountain is about 120 km from Xi’an, but the journey is surprisingly quick. The fastest high-speed train takes around 28 minutes to reach Huashan North Station from Xi’an, and there are plenty of trains to choose from.
Discover Xi'an's old city charm with a bike ride atop the ancient City Wall, Xian Museum visit, Big Wild Goose Pagoda, and Muslim Quarter street food.
Can You Really Do Huashan in One Day?
Yes. Just plan to use the cable car rather than hike all the way up. A typical Huashan day trip from Xi’an looks like this:
Xi’an North Station → Huashan North Station → Scenic Area Visitor Center → Shuttle Bus → Cable Car → Hiking on the Mountain → Cable Car Down → Return to Xi’an
For a first visit, you have two main ways of exploring the mountain:
- West Peak round trip: Less walking, making it a better choice for first-time visitors or those with average fitness.
- West Peak up, North Peak down: See more of the mountain along the way, but expect more walking and a longer day.

Even with the cable car, don’t expect an easy stroll throughout the day trip. There are still plenty of steps and uphill and downhill sections on the mountain. If you want to cover several peaks, take an early high-speed train.
- Best for: Nature lovers, photographers, and hikers.
- Not ideal for: Travelers with limited mobility, a fear of heights, or those looking for a relaxed day out.
Tackle Mount Huashan, China's most thrilling mountain, where sheer granite cliffs and near-vertical plank paths challenge even the most adventurous hikers.
Luoyang: An Easy Cultural Day Trip from Xi’an
Luoyang works particularly well when you want a cultural day out without spending most of the day on the road.
The high-speed train from Xi’an North to Luoyang Longmen takes as little as 1 hour 15 minutes with frequent schedules. For anyone interested in grottoes, Buddhist art, or ancient Chinese history, that makes Luoyang a natural choice for a day trip from Xi’an.
Don’t pack the day too tightly. A day trip from Xi’an to Luoyang can simply look like this:
Xi’an → Luoyang Longmen Station → Longmen Grottoes → simple lunch or city rightseeing → return to Xi’an

Plan on about three hours at Longmen Grottoes, so avoid packing too many other sights into the same day.
Travel from Xi'an to Luoyang by high-speed train and spend the day exploring the UNESCO-listed Longmen Grottoes, home to thousands of Buddhist cliff carvings, before visiting the legendary Shaolin Temple, the birthplace of Zen Buddhism and Chinese kung fu.
Can You Do Longmen Grottoes and Shaolin Temple in One Day?
It’s possible, but you’ll be spending a lot of that day on the move. Shaolin Temple lies near Dengfeng, off the direct route from Longmen Grottoes. Once you factor in the extra driving, the schedule gets very tight and rushed.
With only one day, we’d recommend choosing based on what you actually want to see:
- First visit: Longmen Grottoes
- Really into kung fu: Shaolin Temple on its own

Three Distinctive Day Trips from Xi’an: Foping, Tianshui & Pingyao
If you have already visited Mount Huashan and Luoyang, then these three destinations are worth considering if you return to Xi’an, especially if you’d rather see something beyond the usual highlights.
Foping: A Family Day Trip for Panda Lovers
Foping sits deep in the Qinling Mountains, and most visitors most visitors come to see Foping Panda Valley. It’s important not to confuse it with Foping National Nature Reserve, which focuses mainly on research and wildlife conservation.
Foping gives you a chance to see giant pandas, golden snub-nosed monkeys, and other rare animals while experiencing the forest environment of the Qinling Mountains. Compared with Chengdu, Foping also has fewer visitors and much less of a city feel.

There are more panda-viewing options at Chengdu Panda Base, so that is the better choice if you want to see a large number of pandas. Getting there from Xi’an, however, takes around 3–4 hours each way by high-speed train. For a single day, that’s too much travel.
For families staying in Xi’an and planning to see pandas, Foping is a more realistic family day trip from Xi’an.
Tianshui: Maijishan Grottoes + Fuxi Temple
Tianshui often gets overlooked by foreign visitors, despite being quite easy to reach from Xi’an. The fastest morning high-speed train to Tianshui South takes about 1 hour 28 minutes.
Recommended Visiting Route: Xi’an → Tianshui South → Maijishan Grottoes → Fuxi Temple → Tianshui South → Xi’an
The real catch is not rail connections but local transportation. Maijishan Grottoes and Fuxi Temple are not right next to each other. For a one-day visit, taking a taxi or hiring a private car is much more practical than spending the day switching between buses.

If you’ve already seen Longmen or Yungang Grottoes and still have an appetite for grotto art, Tianshui is a route worth considering.
At approximately 6:00 am, our driver will pick you up from your Xian downtown hotel and transport you to Xian North Railway Station.
Pingyao: You Can Do It in a Day, but Expect a Long One
Can I visit Pingyao from Xi’an in one day? Yes, although the travel time takes up a big part of the day. The high-speed train from Xi’an North to Pingyao Ancient City Station takes around 2 hours 25 minutes to 3 hours each way. That’s roughly 5–6 hours on the train for the round trip.
So don’t try to cover everything. Stick to the main sights inside the old town:
- Pingyao Ancient City Wall
- Ming-Qing Street
- Rishengchang Exchange House
- One key attraction, such as the County Government Office or an armed escort bureau

Shuanglin Temple and Wang Family Courtyard are better left for another trip. With more time, planning an overnight stay is also a much better arrangement than squeezing everything into a Pingyao day trip from Xi’an.
A 3.5-hour high-speed train connects Xi'an to Pingyao for an immersive two-day visit to Pingyao Ancient Town, Wang Family Courtyard, and the mural-filled Shuanglin Temple.
Hukou Waterfall: A Long-Distance Day Trip from Xi’an
The Hukou Waterfall day trip is doable from Xi’an, but be prepared to spend much of the day in the car. Hukou Waterfall is about 350 km away, and the drive usually takes 3–4 hours each way. There is no particularly convenient direct public transport, so a private car or day tour is the practical way to go.
Route: Xi’an → Hukou Waterfall → Xi’an
That is really all you should plan for in one day, since the round trip alone already means 6–8 hours on the road, leaving only a little time for sightseeing. Yan’an city and Ganquan Grand Canyon are better left out rather than packed into the same schedule.

For all three—Yan’an, Hukou Waterfall, and Ganquan Grand Canyon—give yourself 2–3 days.
Start your day with a morning pick-up from your hotel as our driver takes you on a scenic journey to explore the unique terrain of the Loess Plateau in northern Shanxi Province.
High-Speed Train or Private Car for Day Trips from Xi’an?
For day trips from Xi’an, choosing your transport is fairly straightforward: take the high-speed train for destinations that are well connected by rail, and go by car for more remote natural attractions.
Destination |
Recommended Transport |
Why |
Mount Huashan |
High-speed train + scenic-area shuttle |
Fast and frequent |
Luoyang |
High-speed train |
Luoyang Longmen Station is close to Longmen Grottoes |
Tianshui |
High-speed train + taxi/private car |
Maijishan Grottoes and Fuxi Temple are spread out |
Foping |
High-speed train + taxi/scenic-area shuttle |
Xi’an to Foping takes under 1 hour, but Panda Valley is not next to the station |
Pingyao |
Train/high-speed train |
Around 2.5–3 hours each way, saving time compared with driving |
Hukou Waterfall |
Private car/day tour |

So, when looking for day trips from Xi’an by high-speed train, start with Huashan, Luoyang, Tianshui, Foping, or Pingyao.
A private car becomes more useful when you’re traveling with older adults or children, or trying to fit several less-connected sights into one day. The main advantage isn’t luxury but spending less time changing transport or waiting at stations.
