You might know it best for its hot pot and notoriously spicyĀ cuisine, or maybe youāve watched videos of people going up and down endless escalators as they navigate the mountainous city, but thereās so much more to the city as well.
Not only does it have one of the most beautiful nightscapesĀ in all of China, but itās also full of unique historical attractionsĀ likeĀ Hongya Cave, Fengdu Ghost City, and theĀ Dazu rock carvings. More importantly, however, if youāre a history fan or want to see more ofĀ ancient Chinese culture and architecture, this is the place to be.
While many only think of it as the countryās administrative capital, itās also full of iconic landmarksĀ like the Forbidden City, theĀ Great Wall of China, the Summer Palace, and more. While the city offers someĀ historical attractions, such as theĀ Sanxingdui Museum, which features artifacts from a mysterious civilisation from over 3000 years ago, and Dufu Thatched Cottage, a stunning cottage refuge of a Tang poet, Chengdu is perhaps even better suited to nature lovers when you consider its surroundings.

The next Chinese megacityĀ on our list is Shenzhen, which has a populationĀ of 17.99Ā million people. Also located in Guangdong, this is the first city on our list that can be said to be fully modern. While you can still get a taste of ancient life in Nantou Ancient City, Shenzhen itself was little more than a fishing village until the 1970s.
If youāre looking for a high-tech experience, Shenzhen is the perfect stop, especially if you go to Huaqiangbei Electronics Market.Ā Even if you arenāt, however, Shenzhen hasĀ something for everyone: beaches, a huge nature reserve, theme parks, an āartist villageā, and more. Wuhan has 13.86Ā million inhabitants, making it the next most populous city in China. Not only is it an important industrial base in modern China, it also has a history that stretches back over 3,500 years. Said to be Mulanās hometown, many nearby natural landmarks are named after her, such as Mulan Mountain, Mulan Heavenly Lake, and Mulan Grassland.
The city is also a common stop on Yangtze River cruises, and a great place to visit on an empty stomach as it hosts Hubu Alley, a food street that formed during the Ming dynasty. Our recommendation: try the cityās most iconic dish, Wuhan hot dry noodles (see alsoĀ Top 10 Chinese Noodles).

- Area: 11966.5 km²
With a population of 13.63Ā million, Tianjin is the next largest city by population in China. Located near Beijing, this city is often overlooked by tourists, but it has a surprising amount to offer.
The port cityĀ was opened to foreign trade after the Second Opium War, and you can still see the vestiges of that period of history today. TheĀ Five Great Avenues, for example, is full of European-style architecture, as is the Italian Style Town, which unsurprisingly stands in the place of the former Italian Concession.
There are other unique landmarks as well, such as theĀ Porcelain House, another attraction whose name more or less explains itself. Overall, Tianjin is a hugely underrated destination in China, but perhaps thatās its greatest strength, as it offers a more laid-back vibe than any of the other cities on the list.

9. Xiāan (13.17 Million)
- Area: 10108 km²
The next stop on the list is Xiāan, a city with a population of 13.17Ā million. This city is another great place for history lovers, as itās one of ChinaāsĀ historic capitals. Here you can find one of Chinaās most iconic historical attractions, theĀ Terracotta Army, but thatās not all the city has to offer.
The Great Mosque of Xiāan, for example, is fascinating for its unique combination of Chinese and Islamic architecture, and theĀ Wild Goose PagodaĀ features a blend of Chinese, Indian, and Nepalese styles. Another great place to experience the cityās history is the ancient wall,Ā which can be biked or walked on and which offers great views of Xiāan.

Located in central China, Zhengzhou is the capital city of Henan Province and a vital transportation hubĀ (especially for railways) in China. Most people choose Zhengzhou as the first destination on their Henan tours.
The city once served as the capital of the Shang Dynasty (16th ā 11th century BC) over 3,500 years ago. The long history endowed itĀ withĀ rich cultural sites,Ā withĀ Shaolin TempleĀ at the foot of Mount Songshan the most famous.
